Sun 30th Nov 2025 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm
As November draws its final breath and the evenings settle into their quiet winter hush, Taunton Minster prepares for one of its most evocative services of the year — From Darkness to Light.
On Sunday 30th November at 5.00 pm, the great West Doors will open not to dazzling brightness, but to stillness. A church resting in near-darkness. A space that invites visitors to pause, breathe, and let the noise of the world fall away.
Shadows soften along ancient stone. Candles flicker like whispered prayers. A single note of music rises, delicate as frost on a windowpane — and the journey begins.
This is a service not simply attended, but experienced.
It is the slow unfurling of hope.
The moment when silence becomes expectation.
The first step of Advent, where longing is met with promise.
As readings unfold and the music swells, the Minster gradually fills with light — warm, golden, growing brighter with every voice raised and every candle lit.
What begins in darkness transforms before your eyes into a celebration of radiance, anticipation, and the eternal message that light is never lost, only waiting to be kindled.
The evening closes with the soft glow of candles, the scent of winter spices, and seasonal refreshments shared in fellowship.
All are welcome — whether you come to reflect, to begin Advent in peace, or simply to witness the beauty of a centuries-old tradition that still speaks straight to the heart.
Come and journey with us.
Come and step from darkness into light.
