Richard joined the BBC as a technical operator at one of their first experimental local radio stations in 1970. This led to a 30 year career, spent mostly in local and regional broadcasting at locations from Scotland to the Channel Islands and many places in between. Along the way he re-trained as a journalist and ended his time as a senior news producer and reporter. Taking early retirement from the BBC, Richard ran a media consultancy business in Somerset for nearly a decade, advising small and medium sized organisations on how to make the most of the media. He is now retired, enjoys travel and is currently president of Taunton Vale Rotary Club and a founder trustee of CHARIS refugees.
